Cassie needed Brendan now more than ever.

She sat on the edge of the exam table clutching the sheet to her lap in a death grip, fear spiraling through her when she noted the concern in Dr. Anderson’s face. ‘‘Is something wrong?’’ she asked, her voice tremulous.

His careworn features softened. ‘‘I wouldn’t say anything’s wrong. I just want to do the ultrasound to find out when this baby’s due.’’

‘‘You said the first of July.’’

He patted her arm. ‘‘According to what you’ve told me, that should be about right. But your uterus is much larger than it should be. I want to see if there’s a reason for that.’’

Cassie’s fear increased. ‘‘What reason?’’

‘‘Could be many things. You might be one of those women who grow pretty quickly. Or we could be dealing with a multiple birth.’’

Multiple birth? ‘‘You mean twins?’’

He rubbed his chin. ‘‘It’s been known to happen.’’

But how could that happen to her? What would Brendan think if that were true? And where the heck was he? She’d set the alarm as promised, but she’d already been here for almost an hour. Obviously, he’d changed his mind about coming, and he hadn’t even bothered to call.

The doctor gestured to the nurse who rolled the ultrasound machine forward. He told Cassie, ‘‘Lie back so we can see what’s what.’’ After Cassie complied, he pulled up a stool to the side of the small table and pushed up Cassie’s gown, exposing her belly.

He applied warmed gel to her abdomen and traced a wand over the territory for several minutes. ‘‘In a minute now you should be able to see your baby.’’

‘‘Or litter,’’ she muttered, eliciting a laugh from the doctor and nurse.

Cassie didn’t find it at all funny. As much as she wanted this baby, as thrilling as it would be to have twins, she couldn’t imagine what it would be like, or Brendan’s reaction to the news.

But she no longer had to imagine it when Dr. Anderson proclaimed, ‘‘Congratulations, you’ve got a pair.’’

Cassie closed her eyes tightly, then opened them and turned her head toward the screen. She stared at the dark misshapen images that resembled little more than abstract masses. Tiny babies. Her babies. Hers and Brendan’s.

The tears came rolling down Cassie’s cheeks when the doctor pointed out the tiny pulses that indicated heartbeats. Cassie’s own heart thrummed and her chest constricted with a deep maternal love. What had once been only a concept was now reality. Wonderful reality.

After the procedure was concluded, Dr. Anderson helped Cassie back up. ‘‘Questions?’’ he asked.

At the moment she could only think of one. ‘‘Is there anything I need to do differently now?’’

‘‘Not at this point in time. We’ll watch you carefully. Just eat right, get plenty of rest. Early labor is a possibility, so I’ll probably have you begin your maternity leave in your eighth month if not sooner.’’

‘‘What about my activities until then?’’

‘‘As long as you’re not having any problems, bleeding or contractions, you can continue with your regular routine.’’

‘‘Tennis?’’

‘‘As long as you feel up to it.
